Field Strength Prediction on Parallel Architectures - Plans and current status

Abstract:

Prediction of radio wave propagation in urban scenarios plays an important role for planning and optimizing wireless cellular networks. For network planing a huge amount of configurations, and therefore predictions, are needed. A prediction which takes an hour or more to calculate, the time ray tracing approaches often need, is not suitable. There are prediction models which are much faster on the cost of accuracy. This work is looking out for these faster approaches and carries them over to parallel hardware. The hardware trend is showing towards systems with many small cores. To loosen vendor dependencies a abstraction level to the hardware is introduced. OpenCL is an open standard for parallel programming of heterogeneous systems implemented for a rising number of hardware platforms. Further more a change of methodology should keep up the speed while increasing the level of detail, e.g., multi path. A status on the current software development is given.
