ARQ and Optimal Packetisation for VoIP Performance Enhancement over WiMAX

Retransmission strategies for real-time services such as VoIP over IEEE 802.16 networks are considered. Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) is analyzed in terms of bandwidth usage on the downlink as well as the uplink. A new ARQ scheme is proposed and analyzed in terms of the performance metrics packet loss rate, packet delay and link efficiency. Next, the impact of the packetisation interval for VoIP traffic is analysed. Bandwidth used for overheads which include lower layer headers as well as retransmissions at the MAC layer is considered. An optimal packetisation interval selection method for VoIP is presented.
