Modeling and Optimization of an electric auxiliary drive for sailplanes

Abstract:

In the past years the use of electric auxiliary drives in sailplanes has become more common. Low maintenance, less noise and high reliability make them attractive. The project FVA-29 aims to equip an existing sailplane with a modern electric drive and run it under optimal conditions. Therefore a generic system of the electric drive has been analyzed and its modeling and optimization will be presented in this talk. The physical properties and the interplay of the glider, propeller, electric drive and battery and their model parameters will be shown. Based on this, different flight strategies have been found and formulated as optimization problems. The results for given model parameters are used to estimate the flight potential, particularly with respect to the climb rate and range. Simulations with different model parameters, e.g. for different motors or batteries, allow performance predictions and help design missing components for the FVA-29 project.
